MIGRATION SERENGETI 8 days from € 1695,- p.p.

This 8-day Migration Serengeti safari tour through the north of Tanzania, starts with a tantalizing game drive through LAKE MANYARA, after which we continue to the SERENGETI where we will try to track the more than a million gnus, zebras and antelope on the move to new grassland, to follow them over the vast savannahs of the Serengeti. After exiting the SERENGETI, we drive to the famous NGORONGORO CRATER to end at the Kilimanjaro airport for the flight back home or on to the exotic island of Zanzibar for an extended tropical beach holiday.

WHEN DOES THE ‘MIGRATION’ TAKE PLACE…

The ‘Big Trek’ annually starts when the grass on the southern plains has been used up, spurring the herds to move northwards slowly in search of grazing. During the migration, the gnus are constantly exposed to the dangers of lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas on the prowl on the plains, and during the inevitable river crossings where the crocodiles lie in wait. This annually produces spectacular wildlife scenes which attract many photographers and tourists from all over the world.

After a few months in the Maasai Mara in Kenya, the animals return to the southern plains of the SERENGETI during the rainy season where the grazing is good and where they can give birth to their young in February-March. As soon as the young calves are strong enough, the ‘Big Trek’ starts all over again.

The most spectacular scenes are those in which the herds on the hoof cross the Grumeti and Mara Rivers. Many impressive documentaries have recorded the dramatic scenes as the massive crocodiles move in and gorge themselves on the victims. You will find one of these on the link below…

The MIGRATION, also called the ‘Big Trek’, starts in the south of the Serengeti, once the young calves are born. In the illustration above, you can see exactly where and when the more than a million gnus and zebras find themselves during these months… During their annual migration these herds are almost continuously at the mercy of predators.

MTO WA MBU – FANAKA RESORT ***

Fanaka Lodge lies just outside the centre of Mto wa Mbu in a lovely lush environment. One part of it is a camping area, surrounded by a number of neatly furnished 2-4persons bungalows with your own shower and toilet.

In the spring of 2015, a new swimming pool was opened at the Fanaka resort, so guests can cool off after a dusty safari.  Dinner can be taken at the restaurant which also has a cosy bar.

It has neatly furnished 2-4 persons’ rooms with double and single beds, all with mosquito nets. All rooms have a private shower and toilet.

SERENGETI TENTED CAMPS ****

A Tented Camp consists of a number of large, furnished safari tents with proper, made up beds and an adjoining alternative bathroom with shower and toilet. Tented Camps are actually rather tastefully furnished lodges. You are surrounded by canvas walls, but you have all the comforts such as running water and your own toilet. You can enjoy a traditional African atmosphere here.

You will find these Tented Camps at various locations over the vast Serengeti; ideal for following the Migration. Under ‘canvas’ rather than a brick built lodge, you will experience a Tented Camp, the true ‘Out of Africa’ feeling.

At the heart of a Tented Camp is a dinning tent where delicious meals are served. Here you can enjoy being in the middle of the Serengeti African wilderness. Depending on where the herds of gnus and zebras find themselves, we either stay in the Seronera area (heart of the Serengeti), or a combination of Seronera with a Tented Camp in the North of the Serengeti and/or Ndutu, between the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

You make an overnight stay in a big safari tent with a shower and toilet in the immense Serengeti as your front and back yard.

NGORONGORO CRATER – RHINO LODGE ***

Rhino Lodge is a middle class lodge on the crater rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, making it an ideal overnight stop from which to reach the famous Crater after a hearty breakfast.

Rhino Lodge has a good restaurant that serves a dinner buffet, a bar and a lounge with a fireplace. Maasai warriors come in regularly to perform a dance. From the Rhino Lodge you can make a great walk over the crater rim, under the supervision of a Maasai warrior, with wonderful views of the bottom of the crater some 700 metres below you.

There are neatly furnished 2-4 persons’ rooms with a shower and toilet. You will be able to enjoy regular sightings of animals from your porch in your immediate surroundings.
