Flamingos and Big Five safari from € 1495,- p.p.
This relatively short Big Five safari tour takes you through the exceptionally beautiful national parks of ARUSHA, TARANGIRE, LAKE MANYARA and the worldfamous NGORONGORO CRATER, in the north of Tanzania. This Big Five safari tour start in the area surrounding town of Arusha, where we stay in a unique and comfortable lodge with swimmingpool and beautiful sights at mount Meru.
You will first visit the ‘mountain & lakes’ park of ARUSHA National Park. After a full day’s game driving through this small but lovely nature and game reserve, we visit the Tarangire National Park, which is one of the ‘best kept secrets’ in Tanzania. This is the location for the highest concentration of elephants and the park is adorned with thousands of baobab trees.
Driving through a corridor, we travel to LAKE MANYARA by jeep, where we may see lions in trees, either dozing or on the lookout for prey.
To complete the Big Five, we will visit the NGORONGORO CRATER. From the crater rim, at an altitude of about 2300 metres, you will have a breathtaking view over this immense ‘living’ crater. Just 700 meter below there are about 30.000 wild animals, including the black rhino.
This 7-day Flamingos and Big Five safari tour ends at the interesting Maasai village of Mto wa Mbu which enables you to absorb some of the local culture. This is followed directly by a transfer to the Kilimanjaro Airport to either fly back home or on to the exotic island of ZANZIBAR for a tropical beach extension to your holiday.

Here we make a number of game drives and have lunch in a beautiful spot in the Tarangire park with a view of the river valley where many elephants and other wild animals come to quench their thirst. We arrive at the Tarangire Safari Lodge towards the end of the day. Here you can take a refreshing dive into the swimming pool and enjoy a sundowner amid the sound of animals. Dinner and time to chat about the happenings of the day.
DAY 4: Tarangire – Lake Manyara – Mto wa Mbu
We make our first game drive around sunrise, followed by a full breakfast and a last game drive as we head for the Tarangire Park gate. We then drive along a scenic route to the neighbouring Lake Manyara where we spend the rest of the day in search of lions that can be found in trees here.
We will, of course, encounter many other wild animals including exotic birds (of prey) such as vultures and eagles and thousands of flamingos that give the lake its rosy colour. We will see troops of baboons that live in the virgin forest here and we will stop at the hippo pool to see hippos splashing about and yawning to show off their gaping mouths.
At the end of the afternoon, we leave this awesome park to drive to the nearby Maasai village of Mto wa Mbu, after which we go to the Fanaka resort to enjoy the pool and dinner at the restaurant. We spend the night in comfortable rooms with a shower and toilet.
DAY 5: Mto wa Mbu – mountainbike excursion Maasai en Lake Manyara
Today we go on a mountain bike excursion to a Maasai village in the area and to the delta of the Lake Manyara Park. We start with breakfast at the campsite and cycle past the Mto wa Mbu village to a Maasai settlement. Here we learn how the proud Maasai tribe live with their cattle. Children herd he cattle, sheep and goats, and the women work the land.
The women sing while the Maasai men dance using their powerful vertical jumps to outdo each other. There is much laughter and time to pose for photographs or do some filming. We enter one of the Maasai homes and see and hear about the traditional life of this special tribe.
After this entertaining and informative visit to the Maasai, we get on our bicycles and travel via Mto wa Mbu through dense banana plantations, to Lake Manyara where we can see various antelope, flamingos and pelicans and even buffalos. On the way back, we stop at the village for a drink and then continue to our resort where lunch is waiting. The mountain bike tour takes about 5 hours of which we spend about 1,5 hours with the Maasai. The cycling is not strenuous and runs over flat roads and paths, so that everyone can take part.
DAY 6: Ngorongoro Crater – game drive
We drive up a steep slope to get to the famous Ngorongoro Crater. On our way we will come across Maasai settlements and see the Maasai herding their cattle at the bottom of the crater. There is a big soda lake in the middle of the crater with many flamingos and pelicans. You have a chance of seeing many wild animals in the crater, even the threatened black rhino. No giraffes though, as their long legs are unable to carry them down the steep crater slopes. At the end of the afternoon, we travel back to Mto wa Mbu via a beautiful green route. Here we stay at the Fanaka Resort with its new swimming pool. We enjoy a 3-course dinner in the restaurant to swap stories about our day.
DAY 7: Transfer day – back home or an extension to Zanzibar
Depending on the time of your flight, you can either relax by the pool or visit the art and crafts stalls at Mto wa Mbu to purchase some carvings or typical African paintings. Transfers to the Kilimanjaro Airport follow to take you back home… or an inland flight to the exotic island of ZANZIBAR for a tropical beach holiday…
If you opt for an extension to the exotic spice island of Zanzibar, you have a choice of two fantastic beach resorts on the east coast of Zanzibar. These are the 3 *** Reef & Beach Resort, or the more luxurious 4 **** Paradise Beach resort. Both are on an ‘All Inclusive’ basis with the excellent service of local staff under supervision of Dutch management.
